An introduction to the backgrounds of my songs
Below you will find the lyrics of my songs. For those who want to play the songs themselves on the guitar, I have mentioned the chords in the lyrics, bold and in brackets. Sometimes a chord falls in the middle of a word; in those cases, I chose to put the chord before the word.
I hope you will find something in them that speaks to you.
All songs are protected; if you’d like to perform or use them in a public setting, the usual rights arrangements apply. Every song is registered with BumaStemra and Cena, and at the Benelux Office of Intellectual Property BOIP. Hopefully, the streaming platforms will pay their part.
The songs I write are closely tied to my life experiences, as mentioned before. They became a way of understanding and coping with my diagnosis, and music has supported me ever since. Many of my songs serve as self-reflection. Creating these songs has been a journey in itself and still is. It mostly starts as a small spark—an emotion, a line, or one note, the vibration of a string—and from there it grows. From where a text comes often seems like a miracle. Most of my music comes into being because of how I feel at that moment. After that comes the hard work: refining, rewriting, setting it aside, returning to it again. It’s a process of inspiration, perseverance and again inspiration.
Along the way, I met people who helped me bring my music to life. It is a well-known experience of many: when you decide to follow a certain path and remain open to what comes on your way, unexpected things happen that support you. Our neighbor, professional violinist Alies van der Hoeven, once heard me play I Lay Down My Worried Head, picked up her violin and began to play along. That spontaneous session became the start of a special and rewarding collaboration. A street performance of the two of us shortly after can be found on my YouTube channel.

That spontaneous session became the start of a special and rewarding collaboration. A street performance of the two of us shortly after can be found on my YouTube channel.

In spring 2022, after a campsite performance, I met someone whose son, Niels Voskuil, turned out to be a music producer. That autumn, Alies and I went to Drenthe to record my first two songs, Survive and I Lay Down My Worried Head, which I released online via Distrokid under the title My First 2 Chemo-Songs. But Drenthe was too far away for my future plans and through Alies I found a truly dedicated producer in Amsterdam, Ton van Dijk. We are both perfectionists and he feels my music flawlessly. I could not wish for a finer producer.
The presented order of my songs here is not coincidental, but shows the story behind it. During the covid period, I started playing the guitar again. The first song I composed myself was Insane Behavior, a song about the vulnerability of friendship. Not autobiographical, but inspired by examples from my circle of friends. Only very recently did the song find its final form, partly thanks to the contribution of Alies on violin. That's why my first song is presented here as the last.
The second song was Stranger In My House. When it came about in June 2021, I didn't understand who that Stranger was: An alter ego? Kind of conscience? When a month later the first tumor in my neck was discovered on a CT scan one of my sons said: "You have unconsciously written about your cancer and told yourself how to deal with it". That meant: not to see it as an enemy, but as something you have to live with.
Before the inevitable chemo of more than a year would start in September, we were allowed to go to France with the caravan for a few weeks. There, sitting in the grass at the campsite, the song Survive was created in my state of despair. A kind of prayer with phrases like "Poison poison in my veins, let it not be in vain" and "Help me to be strong".
During the chemo therapy, the guitar was my great support, next to Karin. When I felt bad, in the pit, I admonished myself, and that's how the song Stand Up You Fool came about. To prevent me from withdrawing too much into my shrinking world. Songs as conversations with myself. Halfway through chemo, spring 2022, I was really down and out for once and even felt like giving up. From
that state the song I Lay Down My Worried Head was born. Again, a kind of prayer. And as was said, the start of my collaboration with Alies.
But the chemo has two faces: it also intensifies the appreciation for life and forces self-examination: what am I doing with it? This life is given, do I make it happen? And so the seemingly light-hearted I Like Drinking was born. Just swallow the message.
In October 2022, the chemo was over, and I would still receive immunotherapy every 4 weeks, which is still effective. Oscar, one of my grandchildren, made me a cardboard guitar as a surprise for Sinterklaas. I had just made a song about how we make a mess of this world and leave it for our grandchildren: I Sat Down With My Grandson. For him, I translated the song into Dutch: Ik Zat Laatst Met Mijn Kleinzoon and made a video of it, supposedly playing on his cardboard guitar. You can find it on my YouTube channel. The song leaves nothing to be desired in terms of clarity.
Looking back on the chemo year, it has become clear to us that misery has two sides and, depending on your attitude, among other things, it can also be experienced as a deepening. To be clear: I am lucky about the effectiveness and
wearability of my treatments, it can be much worse, and then it can become much more difficult to stay in touch with the positive sides of misery. But it inspired me to write the song Misery Can Give Good Things. And there was another song that looked back on the chemo year: The Year of the Rose. Because in that year, 2022, the roses flourished more exuberantly than usual, such a year being called a rose year. Oúr rose year, because chemo is something you have together, at least if you are in the fortunate circumstance of having a life partner. It therefore became self-evident that we sang this together, Karin the first voice, because of the beauty of it. The up-tempo parts in this song reflect the outside world, as an invitation not to retire oneself in a shrinking world and isolate oneself, as many are seduced to, when the load to carry becomes too heavy.
A blues should not be missing. The medium to express feelings of loss. When Karin had left for a few days with a friend during an immuno-treatment with the inevitable days of unpredictable mood swings, the song Baby Please Come Home was created. I missed her, and on her way back home, she was gladly surprised to receive it on the phone.

I am somewhat philosophical, hence the wish to sing about things as our two natures: wanting to do the right thing and falling into the bad. And so this prayer arose from a feeling of remorse: I Wish To Be Good To You. Here, Alies' violin adds indispensable tones that underline that feeling.
When normal life resumes its course and pushes away the sense of urgency, for instance, when the life threat has diminished, the illusion of the infinity of life also returns. Not permanently anymore, but still. In that mood, this song
was created in fifteen minutes: I Don't Care. It says it all: just like in many other songs, my double Libra nature resonates here.
And then, as the last song Insane Behavior, about which I wrote in the beginning. On this song, I wanted to give Alies a more prominent role and therefore changed the structure of the song, so that there was room for her in an instrumental intermezzo. And by the way, death also comes into play in this song and with that, the song fits in the list of Songs Towards The End.
When you come to the last phase of your life, it is very natural to think about how we leave the world behind for the next generations. The way I feel it, that's not a world to be proud of. I already expressed my concerns about this in the song I Sat Down With My Grandson. But now even more urgent in the song Nostradamus is Knocking On Our Door. The song is about the insanity in the world and the world-encompassing threats. Ton van Dijk has contributed to the sound of the song with various
instruments such as the cajun, an organ and woodblocks. A intermezzo with warsounds adds to the urgency of the message.

I am often asked why I compose in English. That has to do with how a song is created. Usually that is an intuitive event, in my case. And because of my lifelong orientation towards more English-language than Dutch-language music, the words come to me in English. There are a few things to criticize about my English pronunciation, but thanks to English friends I get good suggestions that I have already been able to apply in several recordings. But still I felt it is a challenge to shed my hesitation and to compose in Dutch as well. So Deze Dag (This Day) is my first song, written from the very beginning in Dutch. Ton added his voice in the background and at the end some trumpets and Alies gave the song the right mood with her violin. The song is about the question: What do/did I make of this day. Have I lived up to my life today? Oh well, there is a pastor in me, that is clear by now.
The most recent song I composed is called Song For Alison, which I wrote in April 2026 as a tribute to a dear English friend and neighbor Alison who died April 2. For the second time. She first died unexpectedly in December 2015, weakened by a lung condition. Karin and I were called in and we applied CPR. It was only through the professionals and their equipment that life returned in her. Fortunately, her mind was undamaged. A long road to recovery began. We were deeply involved with her and a special relationship developed. Due to covid and pneumonia, she was thrown back and it became more and more of a losing battle. Her passing filled me with deep sorrow and from that came this song about her life, partly in the form of a metaphor. Her husband encouraged me to record the song, a tribute to his wife, a brave woman, mother of three boys.

But it's so hard, it’s so hard to think about the (F)

Of this life we (E) rent

(C) Evil calculating leaders (Em) obscure our minds
(Am) Algorithms make us listen only (F) to-our-own-kind
(C) So lies are turned into truth and (Em) truth into lies
(Am) Who stands up against this insanity, (F) who-will-rise
(C) Against these leaders (G) without remorse
(F) Who serve an all-consuming (E) evil force
CHORUS:
(Am) What can bring us to our senses
(G) What can tear down dividing fences
(Am) What can save us from the abyss
(G) Before we forget what listening is
(F) Nostradamus is knocking on our door
(E) So what are we waiting for?
(C) Sanity and goodness are in danger (Em) more than ever
(Am) Crying for our commitment (F) and-en-dea-vor
(C) Are we aware (Em) of the imminent dangers?
(Am) Or do we act like (F) un-com-mit-ted-stran-gers
(C) Lost in our petty dreams (G) screens and games
(F) While at our borders we can see the (E) very first flames
INTERMEZZO WITH WARSOUNDS Am///G///Am///G///F///E---
(C) It seems so easy (Em) to let our animal inside
(Am) Decide our reactions, (F) rea-dy-to-fight
(C) Why not see we are (Em) more alike than we think
(Am) Sitting in the same boat, (F) ready-to-sink.
(C) Unless we reach out (G) to those we reject
(F) Our species is doomed, (E) doomed to be wrecked
CHORUS:
(Am) What can bring us to our senses,
(G) What can tear down dividing fences
(Am) What can save us from the abyss
(G) Before we forget what listening is
(F) Nostradamus is knocking on our door
(E) So what are we waiting for?
(C) Eve of Destruction is not (Em) a song of the past
(Am) We move to the end (F) fas-ter- than-fast
(C) But the means of destruction (Em) are huge this time
(Am) When used it will mean the (F) end-of-man- kind.
(C) What sacrifice does it ask (G) to turn this fate
(F) Before it’s too late, (E) before it’s too late
CHORUS:
(Am) What can bring us to our senses
(G) What can tear down dividing fences
(Am) What can save us from the abyss
(G) Before we forget what listening is
(F) Nostradamus is knocking on our door
(E) So what are we waiting for? (Am) ----

(E7) Heb jij dat ook wel eens, dat de dagen tussen je vingers doorglippen.
Alsof je het eeuwige leven hebt. En dat je dan denkt: Wat wás dit voor een dag
Was dit weer zo’n dag zonder één echt beleefd (A) moment A>G#>G>D7
(D7) Een dag van uitstel en vluchtgedrag
(D7) Een dag waarop ik weg van mijn leegte (G) ren G>F#>F>C7

(C7) Zonder ‘n stuur in mijn handen?

(E) In mijn eigen aards bestaan
(C) Wat kan me doen ontwaken?
(G) Voor ik het weet is alles voorbij
(F) Moet mijn leven eerst in het slop geraken?
(E) Hoe keer ik in hemelsnaam dit tij?

Intro: bes+g a+f# g+e a+f# g+e e+c# d+b E-E6-E-E6-E-E6-E-E6-A-C7g-E-E6-E bc#ec#
(E-E6) You sailed on a quiet friendly sea
(E-E6) Taking care of your little family
(A) Of course you had your worries (C7g) every mother(E) has (E-E6)
(A) But you did your best,(C7g) your very (E) best (E-E6 bc#ec#)
(E-E6) Your own health sometimes you did not mind
(E-E6) So you did not see coming from behind
(A) That big wave, (C7g) deadly and (E) mean
(A) That took you by surprise (C7g) unfore-(E)-seen (E-E6 bc#ec#)
(A) You drowned (C7g) in the sea
(E) Away from your poor little(C#7) family
(F#) But deep down two (B7) fishes did not (E) agree (E-E6)
(F#) They lifted you up and gave you back (B7) to your little (E) family (E-E6)

(E-E6) Wounded and weakened but indispensable
(E-E6) Trying to mend what was hardly mendable
(A) You sailed on with all the (C7g) worries every mother (E) has
(A) Still you tried to do (C7g) your very (E) best (E-E6 bc#ec#)
(E-E6) But then the waves were not so friendly anymore.
(E-E6) Making it hard for you to stay on board
(A) You tried to keep your spirits (C7g) high … in the face of coming (E) death (E-E6)
(A) While you felt the weakness (C7g) of your fading (E) breath (E-E6 bc#ec#)
(A) And now you have reached your (C7g) final shore
(E) No worries (C#7) anymore
(F#) See you (B7) at the other (E) side
(F#) Where there is Peace (B7) and Merciful (E) Light
